In this interview, I sit down with Sergia Louise Anderson, owner of The Vertitude Santa Rosa and creator of Pole Dance Foundations, to talk about what actually helps pole dancers improve, especially in the early stages when everything feels awkward and uncertain.

Sergia is a US Pole Dance Champion, choreographer, and lifelong movement educator who has taught around the world and built her programs specifically to help pole dancers fill the gaps in their training and become well-rounded, confident dancers.  In our conversation, we talk about her approach to building real foundations in dance movement, tricks, and flow... and why so many dancers feel stuck even when they’re taking classes consistently.

We also talk about something that doesn’t get discussed enough in the pole world: being a mother and a pole dancer. Sergia shares the unique challenges that come with balancing training, identity, time, and expectations, and her advice for moms who are trying to grow in their pole journey while also raising a family.

And of course, I asked the question everyone wants answered: “How do I actually get better at pole?” Her answer might surprise you — and it’s probably not what you think.

If this conversation inspires you and you want to dive deeper into low flow and grounded movement, check out the free 4-day virtual event Low Flow Pole Dance Summit, where 25+ instructors teach low-flow technique, floorwork, transitions, and artistry to help polers build confidence and movement quality.
